伏 鉄砲娘の捕物帳

Directed by Masayuki Miyaji, Hiroshi Haraguchi

Synopsis

Hamaji, a young huntress from the mountains, stumbles into the middle of a shogun’s vendetta against a group of human-dog hybrids, the Fusé. Rumors of Fusé murdering innocent people in the bustling city of Edo have sparked a bounty for their heads. Along with her brother, Hamaji joins the hunt for this dangerous quarry, but after accidentally befriending one of them, Hamaji is torn between two worlds: her life as a self-reliant huntress, and the young woman her new friend has helped her to uncover.

Pretty fun movie with beautiful art direction and animation. I like that the art style is distinctive from other anime shows/films. I wish the director and writer had taken a little bit more creative liberty to explore the two leads' characters and make them more dimensional.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

I enjoyed it but straight-up there is so much that doesn't make any sense??? It was total mess??

That storyline was so intriguing & then went nowhere?? Did the guy die because he didn't consume any essence???

It's strange because the whole thing was kinda disjointed but it had MOMENTS with excellent mood/intrigue like Shino hiding from girl's brother or the kimono shop or the theater whispering to meet up later & the chase scenes.

MC is just chill at their crush being a serial killer & doesn't react to it??? MC's favorite food is literal dog soup & they fall for a werewolf that eats human souls? Why is everything so messed up both ways? Are they meant to destroy each other except…

I randomly found this one on Amazon Prime and I'm really glad to say that this was a surprisingly great watch considering how unknown it is.

I wasn't familiar with the novel that this was based on but the story itself personally wasn't anything special and became progressively messier after an excellent first half. I thought that the protagonist Hamaji was a very easy character to get behind and served as the heart of this journey thanks to her likable personality and satisfying character arc alongside her brother Dousetsu. Unfortunately, most of the other characters felt a little one-dimensional, which made it difficult for me to get emotionally invested in them later on in the movie during the second half.…

I wish this was written to be a short series instead of a movie so that we had more time to absorb the characters and their motivations. They way it begins to touch on themes of liminality, gender fluidity, family, and spirituality, all seemed to be coming from an interesting angle but it felt like they had to rush through to make it to the end. I also loved the 2D animation and character designs, so much that I felt like most of the 3D moments were unnecessary. Maybe I would feel more satisfied with the world building if I read the novel because it feels like there was a lot left out that had more to be said.

But that being said I’m ready for a bishounen furry to sweep me off my feet 😮‍💨

Fuse, Memoirs of the Hunter Girl may not be the snappiest film title, but it's a fairly decent anime offering from last year based on a Japanese epic novel, Nansō Satomi Hakkenden (The Eight Dog Chronicles). The story has been adapted into television and film many times, including the 1983 film Legend of 8 Samurai starring Sonny Chiba, and this isn't even the first anime offering, but this interpretation is a colourful and well structured action-drama.

Masayuki Miyaji took up the challenge of turning one of the world's longest novels into an anime feature in his directorial debut though having gained his reputation through his TV series Xam'd Lost Memories and working on features such as Spirited Away and My…

There’s some unexplained parts of this movie that I didn’t know what was going on.

Where did the water sword come from?

  • Review by Phil Witmer ★★★½

Reaches an amusingly convoluted climax where about four different plotlines—half of which have only been alluded to rather than properly developed—are all trying to hit their highs while elaborate, gorgeous action scenes vie for your attention. Before then it's a very capable, engaging Ghibli rip that seeks to *checks notes* tell the story of how a famous Japanese novel was written while also adapting that same novel as a supernatural coming-of-age romance that explores gender performativity. Okay, so maybe this was too dense from the jump, but the warm, amiable characters and counterintuitively colourful art direction (this is a fairly bloody movie but most of the crimson is splashed against brightly lit pastels) make sure that the muck of ideas here is always inviting to sink into. Watching anime again only reminds me how so few live-action films even attempt to truly STAGE their scenes.

One of the stupidest movies I’ve ever seen. Its colorful sure but that honestly just makes it worse. Berserk has to look like crap but this gets an approved massive animation budget?

I wish the story had dug into the characters deeper… I like Shino's Fuse form.

  • Review by Nathalia ★★

I didn’t know much about this movie going in, but I’m still kind of disappointed. The potential was there, but the excecution was bad. The scenes were cut and placed in a strange way, so the plot didn’t always make sense. This was more style over substance.

    I liked this quote tho:
