Critics Consensus

It suffers from some tonal inconsistency and a deflated sense of wonder, but Oz the Great and Powerful still packs enough visual dazzle and clever wit to be entertaining in its own right.

Oz the Great and Powerful | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Jenny Catchings Bitch Media Make no mistake, Oz the Great & Powerful a beautiful film... But any true weight of vacancy rests in the script itself - and no feats of acting could have fundamentally changed this trap. Jan 14, 2021 Full Review Oz the Great and Powerful | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Larushka Ivan-Zadeh metro.co.uk With flying monkeys, Yellow Brick Road and sequin-spangled witches all faithfully reproduced, it's impossible to see this as a standalone film, given it looks like an HD colouring book version of the original movie. Panther Paste Magazine Today, Oz the Great and Powerful boasts collective and equal distaste among audiences and critics alike, which suggests that there’s something to be resisted within the film. matthias s Watched *Oz the Great and Powerful* again after being blown away by it as a teenager, and while it’s still entertaining, I can’t help but notice the flaws now. It’s decent as a prequel, with a story that works well enough, but it doesn’t come close to the charm of the 1939 classic. The origin story of the Wicked Witch didn’t sit right with me—it felt a bit off and unnecessary. Also, the heavy use of CGI takes away some of the magic. It looks cool in parts, but it’s overdone, making it feel less timeless and more like a product of its time. That said, it’s still a fun movie to throw on when you want something easy to watch under a blanket. I didn’t always love some of the creative choices, but overall, it’s decent enough for what it is. Not great, not terrible—just okay. Then again I feel like the original shouldve just been left alone because it was perfect on its own. Basically the definition of ok, not great, just ok. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/25/24 Full Review Eye C The story is interesting and with good ideas, but they went over the top with the CGI, and it makes looks the movie so fake. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/25/24 Full Review Henry C This movie deserves more love it is well made and well directed and has a good villian and helps you understand the wizard of oz in a more backstory way Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/22/24 Full Review alan g Visually beautiful. The lead actresses are beautiful but Franco ruins it with his "performance". He can't act and has no business in this business.
