Nowruz ushers in the warmth of the spring as the occurrence of the ‘March equinox’ marks the onset of the summer season. According to the Iranian Solar Hijri calendar, the first day of the Iranian New Year typically falls around the 20th of March.
This 3,500-year-old festival finds its origin in the ancient Iranian religion—‘Of zoroastrianism’. The celebrations of Nowruz are observed in South Asia, the Balkans, Western Asia, Middle Eastern countries, and several parts of Europe. It is celebrated by Muslims all around the world.
The timings and celebrations of the Persian New Year may vary according to the culture and tradition. In India, this year Nowruz will be observed on 20th March. In Tehran, the beginning of the auspicious time of ‘Nowruz’ is 6:36 (20th March), 3:06 in London, and 23:06 in the United States.

International Day of Nowruz
’ followed by a mandate issued by the United Nations General Assembly’. The 13-day-long celebration is in full swing in Tajikistan, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, India, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Pakistan. The celebrations of Nowruz can be seen in various cities across the world as Los Angeles, Toronto, and Canada. In Berlin, Paris, and London which brings communities together for celebration.
The celebrations of Nowruz kick start with great festive preparations rooted in traditions of Iranian culture. The festivities begin by cleaning the homes and celebrating the festival by wearing new clothes. A delicious dish ‘Samanak’ made from germinated wheat flour is commonly cooked by women during the festival. Sabzi Polo (Green herb rice), Kookoo Sabzi (fresh herb frittata), Reshteh Polo (Persian noodle rice), and Mahi Doodhi (smoked fish) are common dishes featuring the grand feast. Another delicious dessert is known as ‘Hafta-Mewa’ which is a mixture of several dry fruits soaked in syrup is also made.
There are several traditions associated with the celebration of Nowruz. For instance, in Afghanistan, the national sport known as ‘buzkashi’ is played which is similar to polo. Another interesting custom observed by Iranian people includes the gathering of all family members around the Haft-sin table (a table symbolizing seven essential elements of nature). People exchange gifts and host Nowruz parties in the spirit of the New Year celebrations.
Nowruz symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. This festival heralds bonhomie, a brand new start, good luck and abundance. The rituals performed during the festival are believed to bestow good fortune and golden opportunities.
