After the death of Richard the Lion-Hearted, a skilled archer named Robin Longstride (Russell Crowe) travels to Nottingham, where villagers suffer under a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation. He meets and falls in love with a spirited widow, Marion (Cate Blanchett), although she is skeptical of his motives. Hoping to win her heart and save the village, Robin gathers a band of warriors to fight corruption in Nottingham, little knowing they will soon be fighting to save England itself.

Scott decided, I think, to get away from the whole campy thing in tights business and wanted to make this 'real'. So there is sweat and dirt and rats at the cheese and even bad teeth, which is fair enough, but it is also joyless.

It recontextualises the myth of Robin Hood into the early Anglo-French Wars, thereby demoting his iconic nemesis, the Sheriff of Nottingham, to a mere bit player. The end result is a lasting genericism, an unfinished origin story that dies without the sequel it so desperately needed but never got.
